Society for
Atmospheric
Studies
A cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary
academic network
promoting
atmospheric studies worldwide.
About
The Society for Atmospheric Studies (SOFAS)
was founded to establish
and advance Atmospheric Studies as a new, cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary field.
The Society seeks to break through
conventional cultural and intellectual
boundaries to study atmospheres as often hidden but powerful and multifaceted phenomena that shape human experience in their lived-bodily relatedness to the lifeworld.
Our approach will be spanning diverse cultural and linguistic concepts of atmosphere,
encompassing also notions such as
“mood” (English), “ambiance” (French), “Stimmung” (German), “氣氛” (qìfēn, Chinese), and “雰囲気” (fun’iki, Japanese).
By exploring these various dimensions,
the Society seeks to position Atmospheric Studies – rooted in the Humanities but fostering also connections with the Social and Natural Sciences – at the forefront of scholarly inquiry into the complex ways atmospheres impact our emotions, environments, social interactions, and more.
